Courage in Despair, Attack, Fear and Terror
Psst – what’s rustling and creaking in the middle of the night? Wolves? Bears? It’s no use trying to pretend: “In the depths of night, the day is not far.” We can say with certainty that many local hills were named after what the citizens of Altena said they found there, what they experienced or what they saw: bewitched humans in animal form, dwarves and giants, heroes and evildoers. There’s a good reason for some of the hills near the castle being called Courage in Despair (“Zweifelmut”), Attack (“Anschlag”), Fear (“Angst”) and Terror (“Schreck”). Are you more courageous than the hunters who used to wander here, and quiet enough to listen to the story about the stag?
